Our Story
Two Cultures. One Table.
Two Cultures. One Table.
To those unfamiliar with them, Turkish and Persian cultures may appear similar. They share a love of generous hospitality, fragrant spices, charcoal grilling and gathering around a table, but they are not the same. Think of the rose and the tulip. The rose holds a special place in Persian art, poetry and culture, while the tulip has deep roots in Turkish history and heritage. Both are beautiful flowers, and they can sit naturally beside one another, but each has its own identity. The same is true of Turkish and Persian cuisine. At Sumac & Saffron, we do not blend the two or present them as fusion. We bring them together at one table while allowing each cuisine to retain the flavours, dishes and traditions that make it distinct. Our Turkish menu brings together much-loved favourites such as meze, Adana kebab, chicken shish and lamb shish. Alongside them, our Persian menu introduces koobideh, joojeh, saffron rice, traditional stews and aromatic rice dishes. Two distinct cultures, proudly presented side by side.
A Personal Vision.
For our founder, Sumac & Saffron is personal. With Persian roots and a longstanding connection to Turkish culture, he wanted to create a restaurant where both cuisines could be represented with knowledge, respect and pride. Persian food remains unfamiliar to many people in Britain, despite its extraordinary history and variety. Sumac & Saffron was created as an invitation to discover it while continuing to celebrate the Turkish dishes already known and loved by so many. Begin with something familiar, try something you have never experienced before and discover what these two cuisines share, as well as what makes each one proudly distinct. The vision was never to choose one culture over the other. It was to create a restaurant where both could meet at one table.
Created By People Who Grew Up With The Food
Our food is created by Turkish and Persian people who know these dishes personally, not simply as recipes, but as part of their own lives, families and cultures. The flavours, techniques and traditions have been passed down through generations: from preparing meze and marinating meats to cooking over charcoal and achieving the fragrance, texture and character of Persian rice. These are dishes our team grew up eating, preparing and sharing around their own family tables. That personal connection is carried into our kitchen and onto every plate we serve. For us, authenticity is not a marketing claim. It comes from knowing how the food should look, smell and taste, and understanding the memories and traditions behind it.
More Than Two Cuisines
In both Turkish and Persian cultures, food is about far more than what is on the plate. It represents hospitality, generosity and time shared with others. A table is somewhere to gather, talk, share and celebrate. Whether you are discovering something new, returning for a favourite, gathering with family or celebrating a special occasion, we want Sumac & Saffron to be a place where everyone feels welcome. We proudly invite both communities and every curious guest to experience two cultures at one table.
